Summary

Grade II listed sewage pump house built around 1910. It is rustic brick with blue-brick and ashlar dressings and a flat roof behind a crenellated parapet. It is a single storey building an houses machinery that was originally gas-fuelled. It is a rare example of a gas-powered pumping station for sewage treatment and is probably unique in having the machinery in situ and operational. The machinery was restored in the late 1980s and has been preserved as a visitor centre by North West Water.

Full Description

Sewage pump house built c 1910. Rustic brick with blue-brick and ashlar dressings; flat roof behind crenellated parapet. Circular, single storey. Doorway faces Weir Street & has boarded double doors on strap hinges. Seven 8-pane windows around building. Building houses two 3 cylinder by Hayward Tyler. Machinery dates from 1910 and was originally gas-fuelled. Full archit. descrip (1). Intact small sewage pumphouse of 1910, complete with original diesel engines and pumps built for Northwich Urban District Council. It has been preserved as a visitor centre by North West Water. A small single storey, circular brick building, built in a Gothic Revival style. Contains the original pair of Crossley gas engines and Hayward Tyler 3-cylinder gas-fired pumps. One of three listed pumping stations with original pumping engines. Site graded to be of clear national importance with appropriate statutory protection. Retains Listed Building Status Grade II (in 2000) and earmarked for possible scheduling (3).
