Full Description

18 Witton Street. The building was recorded prior to demolition. It was a small two-storeyed commercial building originally comprsing a ground-floor shop with living accommodation to the rear and on the first floor. It appears to have originated as a brick building, possibly before 1876, but the greater part of the original structure had been rebuilt in timber framing in successive phases of repair. The timber framing represents a form of subsidence- resistant construction developed in Northwich in the second half of the 19th century as a response to the particular problems posed by brine pumping and the collapse of old salt workings underneath the town.
