Full Description
Formerly called Davenham National Schools. Built in 1856-7 to designs by architect Edward Paley of Lancaster. Gothic in style, built with donations from parish and Government grant. Master's house at the west end. Within the main classrooms boys and girls were separated by curtains and each child from each other by a further curtain which hung between the fixed desk arrangement. Some lessons were taught by the head-master in a smaller central classroom. In 1909 the school was enlarged by the addition of a classroom to the east and probably a school kitchen which significantly altered the original ciruclation of the building. By 1946 the master's house was converted into staff rooms and the school kitchen. In 1956 the school became a primary school only. Full history and description (1).
