The medieval manor house formed the west side of a quadrangle which enclosed a spacious courtyard. All that remains of this is the Gamekeeper's Cottage and Store which was formerly a wing of the medieval monor house. It dates to the later 16th century and has since been altered. It is oak framed and the exterior is now pebble dashed. It is grade II listed. There is some suggestion that the original house was also moated.

Full Description

Aston Old Hall. The manor of Aston belonged to the Aston family from the reign of Henry II. Aston Old Hall was the ancient seat of the Lords of the Manor of Aston and was situated c. a quarter of a mile to the SW of Aston Church. The medieval manor house formed the west side of a quadrangle which enclosed a spacious courtyard (1). In l938 2 of the wings were demolished leaving the present building (old west wing). All that remains of the Old Hall is now the Gamekeeper's Cottage and Store. Formerly a wing of Aston Old Hall, later 16th century altered. Pebbled dash above pebbled brick flush plinth; indications of oak- framed structure beneath pebbledash. Graded grey slate roof, formerly thatched. Each gable end has a curved surface, out of plumb, suggesting warped oak- frame beneath pebbledash. The right gable is jettied above an oriel window now mashed in pebbledash. Full architectural description. Watercolour at Aston Lodge shows two timber-framed wings, one linking present wing to dovecote (RN:935/1/2), now demolished (2). Mr H Talbot reports that there is evidence of the site being moated (3).
