Summary

Site of watermills lost under Ashton's Flashes (flashes are pools caused by subsidence). The Domesday Book of 1086 mentions mills at Witton. And there are references in the 13th and 14th centuries to mills in Witton. These mills are also shown on the following maps of Cheshire by Burdett (1775), Swire & Hutchings (1830), Bryant (1831) and on the Tithe Award of Witton-cum-Twambrook 1845. A tithe award is map produced between 1838 and 1854 which record the names of owners, tenants, and values of property in each parish. They were created to establish taxation rates

Full Description

Site of watermills lost under Ashton's Flashes. Domesday Book mentions mills at Witton. In 1228 'Molendina de Witton' are mentioned; this suggests there were at least two mills. Further references in 1306 and on the following maps - Burdett (1775), Swire & Hutchings (1830), Bryant (1831) and on the Tithe Award of Witton-cum-Twambrook 1845 (EDT 438) (1).
