Summary

Railway viaduct over the Weaver Valley built in 1837 by Joseph Locke (George Stephenson was the senior engineer). Constructed of red sandstone with 20 arches, each with a 63 ft (19.2m) span. It has stylistic similarities with the Sankey Viaduct on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway which was built by the same engineers 3 years earlier. This is the longest viaduct on the Grand Junction Railway, which was built between 1830 and 1850 and linked Liverpool and Manchester to Birmingham.

Full Description

Railway viaduct over the Weaver Valley built in 1837 by Joseph Locke (George Stephenson was the senior engineer). Constructed of red sandstone with 20 arches, each with a 63 ft (19.2m) span. Dutton Viaduct is the longest on the Grand Junction Railway and an early example of a major railway viaduct. It has stylistic similarities with the Sankey Viaduct on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway which was built by the same engineers 3 years earlier (2&4).
