Summary

There is a large section of cuttings and embankments to the South west of Hartford, presumably built for the Grand Junction Railway in 1837. Railway cuttings are artificial "valleys" dug through hills and embankments are artificial hills. They were both created to allow railways to run level over low lying or high ground.
