Monument record 2523/1/2 - Embankment and Cutting, Over & Wharton Railway

Please read our .

Summary

A railway embankment and cutting on either side of the railway sidings to the SW of Wharton Green. Railway cuttings are artificial "valleys" dug through hills to allow the railways to be laid level and embankments are artificial hills built to allow railways to run level over low lying ground. The Winsford and Over Railway, opened in 1870 and was later taken over by the Cheshire Lines Committee. It had closed by 1930 and all the track was then removed. The only trace are the embankments, cuttings and footpath along the original route.
