Summary

Aston Mill is mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as serving the Court. It is shown on Burdetts map of Cheshire, 1777. The wheel pit of this waterwheel still survives. Watermills are known to have been used in Britain during Roman and Saxon times. In the Domesday survey of 1086 around 6,000 mills were recorded. In medieval times each manor had the right to have its own mill with the peasants forced to use it. A tax was payable on all corn ground and there were fines for those to tried to mill corn in their own homes using hand querns.

Full Description

Aston Mill mentioned in Domesday Book as serving the Court (1). Located to SJ 550778. No evidence traced (2). The wheel pit still survives, the wheel was of the overshot type (3). Shown on Burdett, 1777 (4).
