Summary

The first reference to a mill at Utkinton dates from 1517, but the ruins of the mill building date from around 1700. The mill building lies below the dam level and scratch marks observed on the on the gable wall in the 1960s indicated a water wheel with a diameter of around 12m. The mill building was reduced to two fragmentary walls by the late 1980s, but the associated earthworks and mill pond remain in good condition.

In 1965 mill the building was largely ruinous and overgrown. The mill building lay below the dam level and away from it, so that a trough (probably of timber) would have been necessary to convey the water to the wheel, which would be overshot. Scratch marks on the wheel gable indicate a diameter of c.40ft. The mill pool was of considerable length.

In 1986, the mill was reduced to two fragmentary brick walls and stonework, the latter suggesting a date of c.1700 and similar to contemporary work at Utkinton Hall. The millpond owned by angling club.
