Summary

There is a watermill site about 0.5 miles SE of Higher Whitley. It is referred to as "molendinum de Whitteley" in 1295 and later known as "the ould milnes" in 1595. They are shown on maps of Cheshire by Geenwood, 1819 annd Bryant 1831.

Full Description

A watermill site 0.5 miles SE of Higher Whitley. Referred to as "molendinum de Whitteley" in 1295 in the Compotus Rolls of the Lancashire and Cheshire manors of Henry de Lacy Earl of Lincoln 24 & 33 Edward 1. Called "the ould milnes" in 1595 in a Rental in the PRO, which suggests that there were then two mills (1). Near Old Mill Farm, a site with no physical evidence. Shown on Greenwood 1819, Bryant 1831 (2).
