Summary

Square sandstone block with a square dished hollow in the top. It is possibly the socket stone for cross. It is a Scheduled Monument. Standing Crosses are usually of stone and date from the medieval period, mid 10th to mid 16th centuries AD. They served a variety of purposes from places of prayer and pilgrimage to places of public proclamation. At one time, there were over 12,000 of these crosses throughout Britain but many were destroyed during the reformation. There are now less than 2000 crosses remaining, many incomplete.

Full Description

Square sandstone block with sides of 0.6m & with a square dished hollow in the top. Hollow has sides of 0.4m & is up to 3 ins deep. Stone is set in the ground & only 4 ins protrudes above ground level. Possibly the socket stone for cross (1). Red sandstone block measuring 0.64m X 0.64m and stands 0.13m high. A grove has been cut in the wall of the socket on the west side to allow rain water to run out of the socket hole. There are traces of whitewash on the surface of the block (2).
