Summary

19th century records state that a section of the Roman Road that runs from Chester to Manchester was visible here. It is described as being on a large embankent with a 31 foot (9.5 metres) wide roadway. However, a site visit in 1986 could find no surface remains of the road. The site is a Scheduled Monument.

Full Description

Roman Road, Thieves Moss, Oakmere. In 1885 described by Kirk:- the Roman road enters a ploughed field called Broomycrofts on the east side of Station Road. The agger, in order to continue the regular descent of the hill, is on an immense embankment c.10ft high and 67ft wide between ditches. The roadway is 31ft wide. Gravel is visible all along the embankment, which is 250-300yds long (1). Site visit in 1986 by the Field Monument Warden could detect no surface remains of the road. (2).
