Summary

Excavation revealed a layer of large cobbles set in sand below topsoil. On removing these and the underlying sand another surface was revealed consisting of sandstone chips and pebbles rammed into hard red clay. This lies on top of pea gravel which is on top of the natural red clay surface.

Full Description

Excavation revealed a layer of large cobbles set in sand below topsoil. On removing these and the underlying sand another surface was revealed consisiting of sandstone chips and pebbles rammed into hard red clay. To the south was a ditch filled with mixed rubble. A cut revealed the clay to be 250mm deep and laid on a 30mm layer of blue/grey pea gravel which in turn lay on the natural red clay surface (1).
