Monument record 758/1/4 - Vale Royal Abbey - Abbey Kitchen

Summary

In 1539, Henry VIII ordered the abolition of the many monasteries of Britain. He set out to gain their wealth and power for himself as the newly designated head of the Church of England. Monasteries, abbeys and priories were looted for their valuables and destroyed. Vale Royal House was created from the buildings of Vale Royal Abbey following the dissolution. The Abbey Kitchen can be identified as a separate unit within the Vale Royal House and would have formed the south-west corner of the cloister of the Abey. It is a two- bay stone building with most of its original roof surviving. A stone four- centred arched doorway gives access from what must have been the west cloister walk into a room formally open through two storeys to the roof. Two trusses survive, the central one a hammerbeam and the eastern one of tiebeam and collar with diagonal struts. Later alterations included replacement of the fireplaces and insertion of floors, but the room remained a kitchen into modern times.
