Full Description

To north of Marton Grange are two long damp depressions in the ground running parallel for c.90m. Probably the fishery mentioned in the quitclaims of 1284. A small ditch links them to the moat and parts still contain water (1). Two partially waterlogged channels issue from the moat of the grange site (762/1/2). The first, 2m x 1.3m deep runs NE from the NE corner of the moat for 110m before turning NW for a further 105m. Channel is cut by disused railway embankment. Second measures 1.5-3m wide & 1.3m deep & runs N for 90m from the N arm of the moat. It connects with a boggy fishpond 26m x 9m x 1m deep. A second drain runs parallel & connects SE corner of pond with a dry fishpond 12m sq near moat's NW arm. A third pond, 15m x 13m & dry, lies E of the first and partly underlies the embankment (2).
