Full Description
A sizeable quantity of post medieval window glass was recovered during construction of a new boundary wall at the Telephone Exchange site in St John Street in 1937. The deposit was 0.15m thick and spread over an area 0.90m by 0.69m wide. The window glass consisted of plain, stained and painted types along with evidence of glass working including slivers of glass from cutting and glass slag.
As the deposit showed signs of disturbance –both Roman and medieval finds were recovered from it – dating of the glass was complicated although it was suggested that a late 17th century date was possible. (1)
Further deposits of window glass were recovered during subsequent archaeological investigations at the site in 1953. (2)
