Full Description
A number of medieval pits were encountered during archaeological investigations at 62-66 Foregate Street in advance of planned redevelopment in 1956. The work comprised a watching brief carried out by F. H. Thompson and Miss E Pirie.
On the western part of the site, five pits of a medieval or later date were recorded cutting the earlier archaeology while a further two pits were identified in stanchion holes on the eastern part of the site. One large pit immediately north of the Roman features (CHER 8138) also produced several flat pointed stakes, suggesting it may have had a timber lining. (1)
There are possible parallels between the timber boards recovered here to other pits encountered in the area that have previously been identified as tan pits (CHER 10116; 10117)
