Full Description

Roman road. Route at Delamere runs south of, rather than on Stoney Lane, as described by Kirk (1) and Watkin (2). Cropmarks on aerial photographs show the line from SJ 5522 6897 eastwards for 605m, across two short but steep scarp slopes (through which the road was lifted by a still surviving double cut-and-fill construction) to SJ 5541 6902. Here, at the crest of the slope down to Station Road, a cutting and curving terrace commences (3) & (4). This may belong to the later reconstruction seen at Stamford Bridge (RN:844/1/17) and Nettleford (RN:844/1/3). Since the slope has now been cut away by quarrying and for houses, the exact course down cannot be ascertained. A prominent embankment in Broomycrofts was seen in Jan 1964, but has now virtually disappeared (5).
