In 1880 a leaden salt pan was found buried in sand at the works of Messrs N. Ashton & Sons. It is 2.5ft long x 2ft wide x 3ins deep. The lead of which it is composed is 0.25ins thick & it weighs 83lbs. Pan preserved in the office of the manager of the works
<2> Ordnance Survey, 1870-1982, Ordnance Survey Archaeological Record Card, SJ67SE5/1964 (Index). SCH2487.
Lead salt pan now preserved by ICI Ltd at Brunner House, Winnington, Northwich. It was inherited from the Salt Union with which the manager was associated. Possibly the example from Ashton's works. Analysis of the silver content has shown it to be more comparable with Roman than Medieval lead. Ashton's works centred SJ 66557440. A later works was centred at SJ 66467433.
