Full Description
Large flagon found in September 1991 in a mill pool at Pool Bank, Crowton. Vessel is in a brown salt glazed stoneware and although chipped around the base is otherwise complete. It was made locally ay Buckley, Clywd, at the end of the 18th C or in the first half of the 19th C. Both the Catherall and Hancock potteries are known to have produced this type of ware in quantity and there is an almost identical vessel stamped 'CATHERALL' in the Grosvenor Museum collections (Acc no. 65.L.1957). German imports in the 16th C & 17th C (including Bellarmines) stimulated production in this country and the technology was borrowed. The form of this flagon is extremely long lived, was produced at a variety of centres and continues well into the 20th C as a whisky, cider or wine container (1).
