Find Spot record 1003 - Prehistoric Stone Axe from Helsby

A small axe was found in a field on the hillside at Helsby in 1925. It is almond shaped, 4.125ins long x 2.312ins wide & made from a fine-grained volcanic rock. The upper part is rough, but the lower half has been polished. In section the axe is oval, but with straight sides. The butt has been damaged but that appears to have been oval in form (1). The axe from Helsby is in Liverpool Museum (2). Polished axe, faceted sides, fine-grained stone. Group VI, 117mm long x 55mm wide x 29mm thick (4). In Merseyside Museum.(5).
