Monument record 1016/1/1 - Roman road - Cotebrook to Cuddington

Please read our .

Summary

A roman road runs between Cotebrook to Cuddington. It seems to be a link between the Oakmere to Cuddington road and the Chester to Manchester road. Observations during pipeline construction revealed features parallel to the modern A49. The remains of the road consist of a trench, a 2.4 metre wide band of dark brown sand, a ditch and a thick layer of pebbles in dark brown sand. The ditch is interpreted as the margino or bridle path, although there is evidence of wheel ruts.

Roman road, Cotebrook to Cuddington. Observations during pipeline construction revealed features parallel to the modern A49 between it & a parish boundary to the east consisting of, from west to east at SJ 57466617, a trench 1.8m wide & 13cm deep, a band of dark brown sand 2.4m in width, a ditch 1.8m wide & 50cm deep & a thick layer of pebbles in dark brown sand 7. 6m wide & 13cm deep. Seems that the road RN:1006/1 was a link between this & the Chester to Manchester road (RN:844/1)

<2> Ordnance Survey, 1870-1982, Ordnance Survey Archaeological Record Card, SJ56NE28 1985 (Index). SCH2487.

Observation by A C & E Waddelove during pipeline laying traced a Roman road just east of the A49 road; a section at SJ457466617 revealed metalling 7.6m wide and a side ditch. This is suggersted to form a Roman road from Cotebrook to Cuddington,

No surface field evidence for Roman Road, field under crop [F.I. WDC 03.03.87]

The ditch is interpreted as the margino or bridle path, although it had wheel-ruts along it. There was neither ditch nor margino on the E but intermittent wheel-ruts in the sand showed there aswell, both perhaps pointing to continued use after the actual road became too rough for traffic
