Monument record 1006/1/1 - Roman road - Oakmere to Cuddington

Roman road, Oakmere to Cuddington. The existence of the road, described by Kirk,(3) has been confirmed by aerial photographs & a section at SJ 58427036 in the top of a quarryface revealed a construction 14.4m wide consisting of, from south to north, a band of small pebbles in dark brown sand 1.8m wide, large pebbles under small extending for 6.6m, a strip of sand 6m in width & a 5.4m wide layer of pebbles & fine gravel, but thicknesses could not be determined because some materials had already been removed in preparation for quarrying (1)(2).
