Full Description

Junction of Roman roads, Chester to Manchester & Chester to Middlewich. Excavation in Nettleford Wood at the convergence of 2 cuttings revealed that the sandstone bedrock had been levelled & its natural fissures filled with rubble in the construction. The carriageways measured 6.7m & 7. 2m wide respectively, between the drainage gulleys found at all 4 edges. The inner 2 of these were joined to form a regularly shaped channel 0.38m wide & 0.20m deep to take the water under the actual junction. The 2 roads were obviously contemporary & of equal importance (1).
