Full Description
Roman road, Chester to Manchester. The visible embankment was found to belong to a disused mineral railway, but the road was identified at a lower level. The original surface c.5.2m wide was bounded on the N.side by a small side ditch. This came to be filled with gravel, which eventually spraed to a width of nearly 10m. Excavated by G.D.B.Jones & J.F.Manley (1). From area excavation the road proved to be nearly 10m wide. Underlying the road surface was a gravel & sand spread in which the cobbling was more evident on the E side. The road surface was formed of tightly packed water- worn gravel. The road had been disturbed to the N, by a pair of furrows. Also on the north was the original side ditch (2).
