Summary

Base of windmill built in 1721 for Robert Davies of Manley. It survives as a circle of sandstone masonry on top of an mound. It is in close proximity to Manley House, now Manley Hall and is thought to have been the estate mill. It is shown as a survey point in Burdett's survey of the County Palatine of Chester 1777 where it is marked as Manley Mill

Full Description

Base of windmill in the grounds of cottage at Rookery Wood. 1721 for Robert Davies of Manley. Circle of sandstone masonry with internal diam of 28ft 6ins, wall thickness of 2ft and height 8ins to 1ft 6ins, standing on top of a mound elevated above the surrounding plain. Mill shown as survey point in Burdett's survey of the County Palatine of Chester 1777 and is marked as Manley Mill. It is in close proximity to Manley House, now Manley Hall and is thought to have been the estate mill. 30ft away from the mill, at the foot of the mound there is a curved stone 6ft x 2ft which was obviously part of mill structure. It is inscribed "Rob't Davies of Manley Esq erected this Anno Dom 1721". A short flight of steps lead up to the mound from the mill house, now Manley Cottage, but the approach to the mill for transport purposes was from the lane N between Manley Hall & Rookery Wood, which is the only level approach to the site.
