Summary

St Mary's Church, Weaverham is Grade I listed. It has a mid 15th century tower, with 16th century additions and was restored in the 19th century. It is red sandstone with a Welsh slate roof and a tower to the west. This is a very large and complete church of the Post-Reformation period. A church is recorded here at the time of the Norman Conquest (1066) . Vale Royal Abbey later had a prison and a court here. The manor of Weaverham was held for 250 years by Vale Royal Abbey and so the church must have been rebuilt after the Dissolution by the new manorial owners. In 1539, Henry VIII ordered the abolition of the many monasteries of Britain. He set out to gain their wealth and power for himself as the newly designated head of the Church of England. Monasteries, abbeys and priories were looted for their valuables and destroyed. These ruins often became a convenient source of building stone and few survive to any height today.
