Summary

Grade II* listed church. It was originally a Chapel but rebuilt as a church in the late 16th century. It was again restored and altered in the 19th century. The exterior has brown brickwork, stone dressings and a grey slate roof.

Full Description

Church of St Luke, Lower Whitley. Rebuilt before 1594 on the foundations of a Chapel of Ease temp, Henry III. Renovated and considerably altered in 1834 and 1880 (1). Church, formerly a Chapel rebuilt at the expense of Thomas Touchet in the late 16th century and roofed early 17th century. The exterior was altered and much restored in 1864 and later. Brown brickwork with stone dressings and grey slate roofs. A small church with west porch, north-west bell turret, organ chamber 1879, expressed as south transept, chancel and polygonal-apse sanctuary. Interior has outstanding hammer-beam arch-braced collar trusses (2). Incumbents from 1541. Registers from 1777 (3). Full architectural description (2) and (3).
