Summary

The Church of St Helen is Grade II* listed. It was built in the 15th century and now has extensive 19th century additions and alterations. It is red sandstone with a slate roof. Inside are 17th and 18th century monuments to the Crewe and Done families.

Full Description

Church of St Helen, Off High Street. 15th century with extensive 19th century additions and alterations. By Crowther of Manchester, repaired 1931-32 by Perry Worthington. Red sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. South-west tower of three stages, aisled naved and chancel. North-east and south-east chapels, west vestry and south-west baptistry. Only the north- east and south-east chapels retain Perpendicular features. Interior: Nave has arcades of four bays with octagonal piers and double chamfered arches. Nave and chancel roofsare of arched braces and principals, the south-east chapel has a panelled roof, the north-east has moulded arched braces with brattished collars and King posts above. 17th and 18th century monuments to the Crewe and Done families.
