Full Description
Between March and June 1956, the site formerly occupied by 62-66 Foregate Street, was prepared for the erection of a new office building for the Co-op Permanent Building Society. A watching brief was carried out by F. H. Thompson and Miss E Pirie. On the west part of the site, traces of a building were revealed. Earliest phase of timber with a floor which sealed Flavian samian. Later phase was of stone when clay and cobble wall footings were inserted through layers of make-up running into the Hadrianic-Antonine period. The building was presumably Antonine or later. Its north-south length was at least 9m and its width at least 3m (1).
