Summary

Grade II listed farmhouse, now a public house. It was built in the mid/late 17th century. The walls are red brick with a slate roof. The house and adjacent 18th century barn (now a sports complex) were originally a grange of Vale Royal Abbey. A Grange is an area of monastic land that lies outside the Abbey’s main land holdings. They were usually farms and were run by the laymen of the monastic order or by hired labour. At this dissolution, it was granted to a member of the Starkie family and afterwards passed to the Cholmondeleys of Vale Royal. The house is said to have been rebuilt in the 17th century. Though first mentioned in 1326 excavations oin the 1970s have failed to reveal structural evidence for the medieval grange and only 1 sherd of medieval pottery was found. Several ditches were found, which were all probably 17th and 18th century garden features associated with the present farmhouse.
