Full Description
Village of Tarporley. Mentioned in Domesday book in 1086 as Torpelie. According to Ormerod, before Domesday the barons of Kinderton were 'grantees' of this manor. After the Conquest it formed part of the land held by Gilbert of Venables & later passed to a family who assumed the name Torperlie. A market was granted to Hugh de Torporlie in 1281 & the town was listed as a borough with a mayor in deeds of 1348. Subsequently ownership descended to the Dones of Utkinton Hall & the history of the village is closely linked with this family. During the 18th C the dominant landowners were the Crewes who were responsible for the almshousesin 1704 & the market court in 1758 (1).
