Monument record 669/0/1 - Great Budworth Stocks

Please read our .

Summary

Sources suggest that the village stocks were last used in the 17th century, however it is probable that the present stocks were constructed in the early eighteenth century and restored in 1952. The stocks are set on a raised cobbled plinth next to the churchyard wall. Two red sandstone piers hold a replacement oak plank with four footholds. The southern side stone comprises a single stone and retains evidence of a strap fitting on its eastern and western faces. The northern side stone comprises three blocks with 'LH' inscribed on the west face and 'T' on the east face together with minor inscribed graffiti. The southern side stone also has minor inscribed graffiti. Stocks were used as a form of punishment in towns and villages from medieval times to the 19th century. A person would be placed in the stocks and fastened by their ankles and subject to public humiliation.
