Please read our .

Summary

A pond depicted on the tithe map of 1844 may be a fish pond which was associated with the adjacent Castle at Frodsham. Fishponds were often part of large estates or monasteries in medieval times. Fish was an important part of the diet for the rich, particularly for those in religious houses where abstinence from meat was frequently required.

Adjacent to the manor were three fishponds which are shown on the Tithe Map. One of these lay across the Chester Road, between Dig Lane Farm and the Castle.

This map depicts an approximately north south aligned linear pond, curving to the north-east at it's northern end. It is approximately 180 metres long and up to twenty metres wide. The plot name is Old Wash.

A previously unrecorded, curved bank and ditch feature to the west of the park, which appears to be an extension of Dig Lane to its north, is clearly visible on the 1836 Tithe map and LIDAR survey. This feature may form part of the bailey to a motte and bailey castle, an enclosure associated with the castle and fortified manor house, or a preconquest manorial site. See CHER 984/1/0.
