Full Description

The present Stanthorne Hall, of early 19th century date, lies on or near the site of the ancient manor house, which was surrounded by a moat & pulled down c.1810. Moat appears to have been largely filled up, but the NE section still exists adjacent to the present house. No description of the old house survives. House is described as an ancient seat of the Walley family. The manor of Stanthorne was in the possession of the Rahers family in the 13th & 14th centuries & subsequently passed through many hands. About 1800 Stanthorne, divided into Great & Little Stanthorne, was sold. The manor & the hall were acquired by Richard Dutton & after 1817 another mansion on the estate-Spitel Hill or Stanthorne Hill was also acquired by the Duttons (1). OS suggest moat is more likely to be remains of marl digging. It is Z-shaped with irregular sides & near vertical scarps up to 1.6m high. It spreads into a marl pit in the N. No trace of it having been a complete enclosure (2).
