Summary

Dutton Hall was the manor house of the Duttons. It was built before 1534 with a separate domestic chapel and surrounded by a moat. It was rebuilt by Sir Piers Dutton in 1534-1539 and the chapel was incorporated into the main building. Inside there was a Great hall, Buittery and minstrels gallery. The hall, apart from the outbuildings was taken down in 1933 and re-erected at East Grinstead in Sussex. The name Dutton Hall now applies to a modern farm.

Full Description

Dutton Hall, the manor house of the Duttons. Built before 1534 with a separate domestic chapel (RN:941/1/2). In 1534 the line passed to Sir Piers Dutton of Hatton, upon the death of Laurence Dutton of Dutton without issue. Sir Piers rebuilt Dutton Hall in 1534-1539 & incorporated the domestic chapel into the main building. Inscriptions on the hall of 1539, on the main building & 1541 on the porch. In the interior on the right of the entrance hall was the buttery, while on the left was the great hall, 40ft long x 20ft wide x 25ft high. This had a minstrels gallery & was separated from the passage by a screen with ornamental pilasters ending in octagonal capitals, supporting a covered ceiling, at the edge of which was an inscription. The hall, apart from the outbuildings was taken down in 1933 & re-erected at East Grinstead in Sussex. The name Dutton Hall now applies to a modern farm at SJ 5922 7753 (1). The hall was surrounded by a moat (2).
