Summary

This prehistoric barrow cemetery is first recorded in the 16th century by John Leland. They are noted again by Ormerod in the 19th century though two of them had been lost. Today only four of the original seven are identifiable. The remaining four are Scheduled Monuments. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze Age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.

Full Description

The Seven Lows Barrow Cemetery. Mentioned by John Leland in 16th century 'there is a place in the Forest of Delamere called the VII Loos wher be scene VII Caste Dikes. There people speak much of them. I think that they were made by Men of Warre.' (1)

Ormerod gives a brief description and plan. 'They are ranged in a form nearly semi-circular and are of different sizes, varying in diameter at the base from 105 to 40 ft. One has been removed in the recent alterations (1812-1819) on the forest and another was opened at a former period; both of which are composed of the dry gravelly soil of the forest and contained a black matter.' (2)

In 1897 OS recored only four barrows and Shone visited the site in November 1907, only to find them almost levelled, remaining as slight circular rises (3).
