Full Description
Village Cross, Royal Lane. 17th or 18th century. Red sandstone. Square stepped base supporting cross with square shaft and rectangular base dated 1977. Square base of c.2ft depth with six steps above rising to square platform on which stands the cross and its base (1). Full architectural description (1) and (2). Base has sides of 3.5m and is 1.7m high. It is composed of at least three different types of stone. Similar oblong shaped blocks of red sandstone,up to 1m long, have been widely used, locally, in the walling of farm and domestic buildings and in old garden walls. Seems likely that the stones derive from similar sources, but possibly mark the site of a village cross (3).
