Watkin in his account of Roman Cheshire references information presented by Beaumont (see 2) in a pamphlet he wrote on Wilderspool (1876). In this he describes that the Rev. George Heron of Daresbury Hall had informed him in 1825 that during the excavation for the Weaver canal at Sutton across the Chester turnpike road in 1808, they found 'a semicircular arch of good masonry, which he took to be Roman work'. At the same time an old pavement approximately 6 feet below the surface was uncovered. This was 8 to 10yds long by 3 to 4yds wide but its direction was not stated.
