Full Description

Sutton Hall,Aston Lane. Now farmhouse, late 15th or early 16th century, extended late 17th century & early 19th century. Brown brick;roof replaced in cement tiles. The earliest part on left is 2 storeys with gable to front and contains late medieval oak-frame great halls of unusual type, cased in brick. Late 17th century right wing has sandstone plinth. Cross-wing at rear of great halls is partly Tudor and partly 1805. Interior: 2 superimposed great halls, both equally rich and forming part of the late 15th or early 16th century structure. The moulded principal posts to the lower and upper great halls are continuous through both storeys,a remarkable feature, showing that the lower and upper halls were parts of the original structure. Lower hall has oak framing, ceiling structure of oak beams, windows with oak mullions and 2 Tudor stone fireplaces. Upper hall has trusses with arched tie-beams,moulded roof panels, massive oak framing & 2 Tudor stone fireplaces. Oak framing suggests that both halls had been shortened. Structure may date to the time of the marnage of Sir John Warburton, who possessed the Hall,to Joan, daughter of Sir William Stanley of Holt "the richest commoner in England" and chamberlain of Henry VII (1).
