Summary

Thirteen sandstone hypocaust pilae have been incorporated into garden retaining wall. Pilae are the supports for the raised floors of hypocausts. The pilae had formed part of the scullery wall of the original cottage, built in 1782-3. This was removed in 1931 to make way for the present house. There is no further evidence for roman activity in the area. The pilae were probably brought here from Chester. Sir Philip Egerton who built the cottage is reported to have removed tiles and pilae from a large roman building discovered in Watergate street, Chester in 1778-9.
