Full Description
Site of the battle of Winnington Bridge on 19th August 1659. Royalists, under the command of Sir George Booth, had just captured Chester & met a Parliamentarian force, under the command of General Lambert, amongst the 'enclosures' at Hartford. Royalists were routed twice & their troops fled to Chester & Warrington. Sir George Booth escaped, but was later captured & sent to the tower (1). Called the last battle of the Civil War by Kendrick, but Civil War ended in 1651. This was part of an unsuccessful attempt to place the exiled Charles II on the English throne (2).
