Summary

In 1940 a polished stone axe was found in the parish of Kingsley near the south edge of Big Wood. The stone it is made of has been identified as being from the Great Langdale in the Lake District.

Full Description

In 1940 a polished stone axe was found in the parish of Kingsley near the south edge of Big Wood, above the valley of the river Weaver. It was presented to the Grosvenor Museum by the finder, Mr Stephen Ravenscroft. The axe has been petrologically identified by Mr Coope of Birmingham University as Group VI from Great Langdale (1). Found during ditch cleaning (2).
