Full Description
<1> Ormerod, G., 1882, The History of the County Palatine and City of Chester, 2/70-71 (Book). SCH1389.
In C13 Helsby was held as a demesne manor under the lordship of Dunham-on-the-Hill, by a family called Hellesby. Later it passed to Thornton and then to Frodsham. Earliest mention of the original hall, which was of timber, was in a contract for the erection of additions in stone in the mid C15. The wooden part perished in a fire prob in the reign of Elizabeth I, when it was leased perhaps as a farmhouse to one of the Hatons of Helsby. The later hall prob occupied a distinct site and derived its name from its proximity to the older site. It was built of brick at the end of the C18 and was used as a farmhouse. Part is of a much older date, particularly a very massive stone chimney built against the westerly side of the house. This is prob part of the original hall (1).
