Summary

Grade II listed cottage. It dates from the early 17th century with later alterations. It is timber framed with partial rendering. It would originally have has a thatched roof. It was originally a farmhouse with a barn at one end. Wood was in plentiful supply as a building material in Britain until the 17th century. It was therefore the most practical material for house building. Timber framed buildings consist of a wooden framework (usually oak) that was infilled to create solid walls. Infill material used included wattle and daub, lath and plaster, brick and weather board. Brick nogging, (brick infill) was often used in the 17th and 18th centuries to replace earlier wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill as it was longer lasting.

A coat and number of iron nails were found during restoration work (reinstatement of thatched roof) at 56 Hillside Road, Overton, Frodsham. The jacket was found stuffed into an area of the chimney, it is not clear whether the nails were found wrapped with the jacket. Likely to be a deliberately "concealed garment".
