Summary

Possible remains of a sandstone lined cesspit were discovered in a garden during gardening. A portion of drain was traced, as well as an area of cobbles and a scatter of pottery that indicates occupation of the site in the 16th and 17th century. This may have been the original site of Norley Hall as this was abandoned in the 18th century when a new hall was built elsewhere.

Sandstone structures were revealed in the garden of The Paddocks, Town Farm Lane, during gardening.

Site visited by a party from the Northwich Archaeology & Local Studies Group. A rectangular structure of ashlar blocks was excavated & was presumed to be the lower portion of a small cess pit. 3 courses survive. The sandstone has herring-bone tooling. The structure was 3ft x 4ft. A portion of drain was traced, possibly a land drain of reused stones from a structure associated with the cess pit. An area of cobbles & a scatter of Midland black, yellow & purple wares indicate occupation of the site in the 16th & 17th C.

This may have been the original site of Norley Hall (RN:913/1), since the hall was abandoned in the 18th C & a new hall built 'on a better site'
