Summary

A hypocaust pillar and roman vase have both been found in Black Firs Wood. Both these finds probably from Chester, brought to the area by Philip Egerton during the construction of the Keeper's Cottage. Sir Philip Egerton who built the cottage is reported to have removed tiles and pilae from a large roman building discovered in Watergate street, Chester in 1778-9.

Full Description

A hypocaust pillar was found in Black Firs Wood by the keeper & not more than 100yds from this spot at SJ57026807, a Roman vase was found in 1966, at the foot of a pine tree. Vase identified by the Grosvenor Museum as North African. Now in possession of landowne. Museum gives grid ref SJ57256875 for the vase, but this is 600m N of landowner's siting (1). Both these finds probably from Chester, brought to the area by Philip Egerton during the construction of the Keeper's Cottage (2).
