Summary

Grade II listed lodge. One of only two permanent dwellings in Delamere Forest. It was built in 1623 with alterations and additions in 1667, 1718 and the 29th century. It is built of local sandstone with a lakeland slate roof. It was originally a single dwelling out was later divided into 3 small dwellings and known as Pugh's Cottages. The building later fell into decay but was restored in the 1930's

Full Description

New Pale Lodge,New Pale Road.1 of only 2 permanent dwellings in Delamere Forest.Formerly farmhouse,now house.Dated 1623,1667 & 1718 with extensive C20 additions & alterations.Dressed tool buff local sandstone, lakeland slate roof.2 storey & bay west front.4th bay has lintel plaque reading P W E 1718 (for Whittingham & Elizabeth Pugh).Int:former hall has a lintel over fireplace reading 1667 P G E (for George & Elizabeth Pugh).Room to rear has fireplace lintel with WB 1623 (for William Boulton).Also inglenook fireplace & chamfered & stopped ceiling beams & chamfered joists (1). New Pale Lodge was originally 1 dwelling,but was later divided internally into 3 small dwellings and known as Pugh's Cottages.The bldg later fell into decay but was restored c.1937,the subdivisions removed & the house again named New Pale Lodge.The oldest date stone is WB 1623 - for William Boulton,who was prob in the service of John Crewe of Utkinton,who succeeded his father-in-law,Sir John Done,as Master Forester of Delamere (3).
