Summary

Grade II listed Quaker Burial Ground Wall, now garden wall at Meeting House Cottage, Meeting House Lane. This sandstone wall stood around the former Quaker Burial Ground which was created in 1686. It was partly rebuilt and altered in 1856. The wall contains the stones from the former Meeting House, which was demolished in 1856. Two stones in the rear wall are inscribed 'Easterly Edge of Friends Meeting House. Built 1686: Taken down 1856 by order of Cheshire Monthly Meeting'.

Full Description

Quaker Burial Ground Wall, now garden wall at Meeting House Cottage, Meeting House Lane. Sandstone wall around former Quaker Burial Ground, 1686, partly rebuilt and altered 1856. The wall contains stones from the former Meeting House, demolished 1856. Two stones in the rear wall are inscribed 'Easterly Edge of Friends Meeting House. Built 1686: Taken down 1856 by order of Cheshire Monthly Meeting' (1). The Quakers meeting place was at Newton. By c.1868 it had become a farm and the burial ground containing several inscribed tombstones formed the farmyard (2). No gravestones (3).
